You wrote, "We would love to share this special day with you. However, considering the destination of this event your absence will be sincerely missed and completely understandable."

No, I would probably not include that. That kinda sorta (lol) makes it sound like you do NOT want them to attend.

The most I have ever seen on an invitation was,
"If you are unable to attend,
we ask your presence in thought and in prayer."
I think that phrase would be more appropriate.
References :
I wouldn't include such a thing because it comes across as rude no matter how you say it. Why not just have an at-home reception like most do who have destination weddings and they are able to invite everyone who wasn't able to attend the ceremony for whatever reason?
References :
we sincerely hope you will be able to join us in spain for our wedding, however we realize that some of you won't be able to make it. we know you wish us well and we will raise our glasses in a toast to our family and friends who couldn't be with us and of course we will send a wedding photo to you as soon as we can!

btw: i think you are absolutely correct in sending invitations even though you know they won't be there. our niece was married last year and because she knew we couldn't make it to italy for her [destination] wedding she didn't bother sending an invitation. i was heartbroken and yes, perhaps that is foolish on my part but there you go!
congrats and happy wedding!
References :
Just send the invitation with no mention of if the person can attend or not. If you have people that you know cannot attend then you send them a seperate note expressing how much you will miss them and that you understand why they are not attending.
References :
Send the normal invitation, but add something like, "For those unable to attend the wedding, there will be a reception at ___ on ___. We wouldn't think of having you miss our celebration!"
